Abu Dhabi Health Authority Launches Comprehensive Oral Health Policy
On 25 June 2019, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) announced a major step forward in abu dhabi health by introducing a comprehensive oral health policy aimed at improving dental services across the emirate.
This initiative reflects DoH’s commitment to building a modern, efficient, and accessible oral healthcare system that serves all residents of Abu Dhabi.
Key Focus Areas of the Oral Health Policy
The new policy is built around four main pillars:
-
Developing an advanced system for dental services and oral healthcare delivery
-
Raising community awareness about preventive care and oral hygiene
-
Supporting research-driven initiatives in oral health
-
Strengthening workforce planning to ensure high-quality abu dhabi health services
Data-Driven Approach by DoH
The policy follows an extensive study conducted by DoH’s Strategy and Public Health divisions, in collaboration with healthcare providers and insurance companies.
According to DoH statistics (2017):
-
Over 85,000 cases of periodontal disease were recorded among adults (27 per 100 individuals)
-
Around 134,110 cases of tooth decay were reported (48 per 100 individuals)
-
Among children:
-
Gum disease affected 10 per 100 individuals
-
Tooth decay reached 44 per 100 individuals
These figures highlight the growing demand for improved dental services within the abu dhabi health system.
Leadership Perspective
Omniyat Al Hajri, Director of the Public Health Division, emphasized:
“Oral health is a top priority for DoH. This policy focuses on improving oral health outcomes, especially for high-risk groups, while ensuring access to high-quality dental services across Abu Dhabi.”
Alignment with Global Health Standards
The policy aligns with global insights from the World Health Organization (WHO), which identifies oral diseases as among the fastest-growing non-communicable health issues worldwide.
Key risk factors include:
-
Poor oral hygiene
-
Lack of fluoride
-
High sugar consumption
-
Smoking
Early diagnosis and preventive care are essential to reducing treatment costs, preventing tooth loss, and improving quality of life.
A Collaborative Vision for Abu Dhabi Health
The DoH roadmap clearly defines the roles of:
-
Healthcare providers
-
Dental professionals
-
Insurance companies
This ensures seamless service delivery and enhances patient experience across all abu dhabi health facilities.
Looking Ahead
The policy emphasizes community involvement and encourages healthcare providers to adopt global best practices. By doing so, DoH aims to deliver culturally responsive, high-quality dental services that meet the evolving needs of Abu Dhabi’s population
